Who do u think u r? – Love
This week marks the end of our series on the Fruits of the Spirit. It also marks John Larson’s final Sunday as Senior Pastor at Hope Church. As he wraps up the series, medical John points out how Love has been at the center of Hope’s ministry.
At the heart of every church that is effective is love. It isn’t a building, here programs or even the people. It is something much bigger than that, sick more mysterious than any of those. It is God dwelling in the lives of his people. Without love we are not only failing to represent Jesus but are simply a “noise”. An irritating one at that.
The Greatest Commandment:
Here are a few hints why that is that case… Jesus was asked… “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ Matthew 22:36-40
The only thing that counts…
Paul wrote to his friends “The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.” Galatians 5:6 So what is this? Timothy Keller has a great definition: “Love means to serve a person for their good and intrinsic value, not for what the person brings you. Its opposite is fear: self protection and abusing people. Its counterfeit is self-affection, where you are attracted to someone and treat them well because of how they make you feel about yourself.”
