Jesus’ Encounter with the Evil Spirits

  • Jesus Overpowers
    • Jesus has unparalleled authority in the spiritual realm
  • Demon possession might be a rare phenomenon but Satan’s work in the world is not
    • Spiritual warfare as a battle of truth v. lies
      • The lie often looks good at first glance
    • Deceptive ideas aimed at God-given desires

Jesus’ encounter with the man

  • Jesus heals
  • Healing leads to obedience

The man’s evangelistic assignment

  • Evangelism as storytelling (If we have a story we are equipped)
  • From “salesman” to “telling a friend your story”
  • 2 suggestions around sharing our story
    • Be honest about the after Jesus part
    • Every story matters (dramatic ≠ better)

Key takeaways:

Be Alert: Are you aware of the ways Satan is trying to influence?

Be Hopeful: Do Confident expectation that Jesus’ presence delivers us from evil

Be Authentic: Do you cultivate the friendships where you are able to exchange stories?

Questions for Reflection/Discussion:

As always feel free to tweak, skip, or add questions to focus on areas you think most relevant to your group.

C.S. Lewis says “There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them. They themselves are equally pleased by both errors”. Which error do you tend to make?

Is it hard for you to believe in the supernatural? Why or why not?

Are you awake to how the forces of evil might be at work in your life trying to distract and destroy?

Satan’s key tactic is to loft deceptive ideas at God given desires. How do you see this play out in your own life?

I focused on consumerism as a deceptive idea that Satan often uses in our context to distract and destroy. How did that hit you?

Why do you think Jesus turned down the man’s request to follow him?

When you hear the word evangelism what comes to mind? Does it energize you or scare you?

What story do you have? How does your life look different after encountering the presence of Jesus? Perhaps take the next several weeks to give each person time to share if you haven’t already in your group.

Do other more dramatic testimonies keep you from sharing your story? Do you agree that dramatic ≠ better?

Does thinking of evangelism as becoming more authentic in friendship help you?

What’s one action step I feel God calling me to take after looking at this passage?
